School of Outdoor Leadership courses are professionally delivered, have a flexible approach and are focused on providing employment pathways into the outdoor education industry. Through the course participants can also develop skills and knowledge for future employment in adventure guiding and tourism, adventure activity instruction, corporate outdoor training and outdoor adventure therapies.

Course Overview:

The Diploma of Outdoor Recreation provides students with the necessary skills, practice and experience to enable them to graduate ‘job ready' and enter into the Outdoor Education industry working with young people. The course is designed in collaboration with the Schools major industry supporters to ensure that students gain the necessary skills and knowledge required for their workplace.

The course is delivered over a two year period which enables sufficient time to sequentially gain technical outdoor leadership skills and develop the underpinning theories and philosophy behind Outdoor Education. This progressive development means that time is devoted to building a solid base of skill and understanding early, setting the foundation for further complex tasks and learning.

Students that wish to enter into the second year of the course will need to hold a current Certificate IV in Outdoor Recreation or be able to demonstrate equivalence though the Recognised Current Learning (RPL) process.

Even though the course if focused on the Outdoor Education sector working with young people, many skills gained are transferable to the adventure tourism, guiding and broader outdoor recreation industry.

Outdoor Leadeship Training:
Combined with course technical components each student will develop a detailed understanding and gain the necessary experience in a wide range of generic Outdoor Leaderships skills. The School of Outdoor Leadership has developed the ‘Leadership Wheel' for use as a base model when delivering course content. The ‘wheel' details specific leadership areas that will be built over the duration of the course in both technical and theoretical sessions.
