Meet our Staff
The staff at the School of Outdoor Leadership have a wide range of experience and skill in the Outdoor Education sector spanning over many decades. As professional trainers that still work in the field with young people, this means our knowledge is current and have an understanding of the demands and issues facing an employee today. All school staff spend time in the field no matter what position is held, this is true to our philosophy in maintaining connection with students.
Our role as trainers is to foster the development of Outdoor Leaders and provide supportive, honest and accurate feedback on performance. Staff at the School are always approachable and will take the time to help an individual reach their full potential.
We look forward to being a part of your learning journey.
Scott Bewley - Head of School
Scott developed his passion for the outdoors whilst growing up as a young lad in Tasmania, this connection formulated an early appreciation of the power and importance of ‘wilderness’. Since that time he has gained a wide range of Outdoor Leadership skills which has seen him fulfil a number of senior roles in various organisations. He has been teaching technical outdoor activities for the past fourteen years and enjoys sharing his love of the natural world whilst watching students grow both technically and personally over the duration of their study.
Scott still finds time in between his Head duties to deliver training in the field as well as work as an Outdoor Educator on programs with young people. With long trips few and far between lately Scott enjoys sharing his passion of climbing and white water kayaking with wife Nicola and the opportunity to get out on a remote river with fly rod in hand ready to explore the meandering trout stream ahead.

Dan Hasson - Diploma Coordinator
Dan’s career as an Outdoor Educator spans a fifteen year timeframe. During that journey he has worked in a number of roles giving him a wide variety of skills and experiences necessary to call upon when delivering training. He has lead many long expeditions with young people in remote areas and enjoys watching the change that comes from time immersed in the experience together. This expedition experience gives Dan the opportunity to pass on his knowledge and skills to those that want to follow in his footsteps. His drive for excellence has seen many developments in programming design and delivery at the school.
Dan is committed to providing opportunities for students to ‘own’ their decision making processes while providing a supportive framework. Though this he believes that students are empowered to succeed and challenges overcome. When not in the office or the field Dan enjoys a casual climb, spending time with his wife Liz on an overseas adventure or working on a project with the new ‘straw bale’ house.

Steve Prothero - Traineeship Coordinator
Steve is considered the ‘tribal elder' of the School and his years of experience in the Outdoor Industry exceed some thirty years. Steve has had a varied career to date with a wide range of experiences as an outdoor guide, instructor and educator. In the early days Steve worked for a number of white water rafting companies both in Australia and overseas mainly in the expedition river environment. He was instrumental in developing and delivering the first Outdoor Leadership courses sixteen years ago in partnership with OEG and eastern TAFE (now Swinburne).
Steve has witnessed and been pivotal in the journey and development of many Outdoor Leaders over the past two decades. His dedication to the development of Outdoor Leaders is a long line of professional educators still active in the industry today. Most trainers at the School have worked as ‘apprentices' under Steve at some stage throughout their careers.
Steve has continued to bring the critical thinking and wisdom needed to the team to help develop a well rounded and effective Outdoor Leader. His patience, thoroughness and high expectations are always valued by students and it is a pleasure to spend time with a person committed to this cause. Whether on the river, at the cliff or in the classroom Steve is always engaging and willing to provide the time for a student to reach their potential.
When not on the job Steve enjoys spending time with the family on an adventure either on the family property or somewhere in the great outdoors.
